Taking Care of Your Skin After Cosmetic Surgery

Always baby your skin to keep it looking its best — especially after cosmetic surgery.

To promote the soft supple skin that goes along with your newer fresher look, use mild, hypoallergenic products like non-soap cleansers and fragrance-free moisturizers. (This will help you heal quickly without damage to the skin.)

Be very careful about sun exposure. Avoid direct sun the first few days after your procedure. If you must go out, use a 30 to 50 SPF sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection. (UVA radiation accelerates skin aging and contributes to skin cancer, while UVB is the main cause of sunburn. An SPF higher than 50 offers minimal additional protection, particularly from UVA rays.)

Stay hydrated, inside and out! Water intake is not only important for your overall health, but crucial for softer, younger looking skin. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.

If you have had a facelift, cheek lift, or other “invasive” cosmetic surgery, you’ll need to treat your incisions and manage any swelling in addition to keeping up with regular skin care.

Ice or cold compresses will help minimize swelling, especially in the first several days after surgery. Try to sleep with your head elevated a bit — this will reduce overnight swelling. Many people find that the herbal supplement Arnica Montana may help reduce swelling and bruising.

You should expect some soreness after cosmetic surgery, but it’s important to continue to cleanse your skin daily. You may use a mild astringent to cleanse sore areas without applying pressure, followed by a gentle moisturizer. Of course, continuing to keep your skin clean and moisturized will help maintain your fresh new look.
